Millennium Volunteers is a national Government-funded initiative for young people aged 16 to 24. Its aims are to encourage, support and recognise young people who give up some of their time for the benefit of others and their local communities. Through MV you can make a difference for both yourself and the community.‘Build on what you're into’ - It’s all about using your skills, hobbies and interests to help others.
‘MV on Your CV’ – At the same time as helping others you can learn new skills, widen your horizons, gain valuable experience, meet new people and build your CV.
Anyone can become an MV – all that matters is that you are between 16 and 24 and you are committed to volunteer some of your spare time. Whether this is just a couple of hours a week or full time, it’s up to you!MV encourages you to get involved in local issues you care about. At the same time you gain experience, confidence and skills. You could be involved in projects such as sports coaching, environmental issues, youth leadership music and dance. Through volunteering you can make a positive difference to your own life and your community.
As a Millennium Volunteer you give your time to help the local community in which you live while doing something you enjoy. In short, use what you are into to help yourself and others.
Group Project?
If there are a group of you who are interested in starting a project to assist the community in some way Millennium Volunteers can help. There are many things that you can do as a group for example start an art group for children or the elderly to learn new skills or new ways to express themselves through art. There are many ways in which you can help so put your thinking caps on and get in touch!
Awards
Millennium Volunteers regards recognition of volunteers as very important. Having physical evidence of the work that you have done not only gives future employers something to think about but also reaffirms to you that the work you do directly impacts the community around you. That is why Millennium Volunteers is set up around the ethos of giving recognition and this is done through awards that are given to the volunteers after they have completed 100 and 200 hours of volunteering activity.
The 10-Hour Award is signed by the Minister for Young People and Learning, while the 200-Hour Award of Excellence is signed by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills, Alan Johnson.
You’ll also find it counts for a lot to have MV on your CV when applying for a place at college, university or for a job.
